Additionally, he has held $100+ million P&L roles at public companies such as Intel and Trend Micro. Alvin received his MS in computer science from MIT and MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.

  • Tom Chittenden

    Founding Director

    WuXi NextCODE Advanced AI Research Laboratory

    Dr. Chittenden is the founding director of the WuXi NextCODE Advanced Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory. This initiative includes a number of deep learning and probabilistic programming projects aimed at furthering scientific understanding of human disease initiation and progression, knowledge that can be directly applied in innovative products for better care and medicine in a range of disease areas.


    The principal focus of Dr. Chittenden's work is the development and application of integrated systems biology models to investigate evolutionary factors of human disease. The broad objective is to understand how genetic variation and somatic mutation regulate aberrant gene activity and subsequent disease biology. To this end, Dr. Chittenden spent a year as a Visiting Research Scientist in the Department of Statistics at the University of Oxford, where he formulated a general strategy for constructing machine learning models by integrating a priori biological knowledge with multiple types of high-throughput genomic and phenotype data.


    Dr. Chittenden is an Accredited Professional Statistician™ with the American Statistical Association. In addition to his position at WuXi NextCODE, he holds academic appointments at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he lectures on biostatistics and mathematical biology. Dr. Chittenden also serves as a Senior Consultant for the Research Computing Group at the Harvard Medical School, and as the Chief Statistical Sciences Advisor for the Global Strategic Initiatives and Planning Committee of the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry. He holds a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology and Biotechnology from Virginia Tech and a DPhil in Statistics from the University of Oxford. His multidisciplinary postdoctoral training includes experimental investigations in Molecular and Cellular Cardiology from the Dartmouth Medical School and Integrative Functional Genomics, Biostatistics, and Mathematical Biology from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health.

    Yingrui Li, Cofounder and Chief Scientist of iCarbonX. In 2004, Yingrui Li was enrolled in the Biology Department at Peking University. In summer 2006, Yingrui interned at BGI Tech and started an exciting career in genome science. Yingrui has published more than a hundred papers in reputable scientific journals such as Science, Nature, Genome Research, etc.In 2012, he was appointed as the CEO of BGI Tech. He was then appointed as the chief scientist of BGI in 2014. In 2016, he was being honored on the "Forbes 30 under 30 Asia" list.

  • Noriko Arai

    Professor, Information and Society Research Division

    Noriko Arai is the program director of an AI challenge, Todai Robot Project, which asks the question: Can AI get into the University of Tokyo? The project aims to visualize both the possibilities and the limitation of current AI by setting a concrete goal: a software system that can pass university entrance exams. In 2015 and 2016, Todai Robot achieved top 20 percent in the exams, and passed more than 60 percent of the universities in Japan.

    The inventor of Reading Skill Test, in 2017 Arai conducted a large-scale survey on reading skills of high and junior high school students with Japan's Ministry of Education. The results revealed that more than half of junior high school students fail to comprehend sentences sampled from their textbooks. Arai founded the Research Institute of Science for Education to elucidate why so many students fail to read and how she can support them.

  • Wang Gang

    Chief Scientist

    Alibaba AI Labs

    Wang Gang is currently a researcher/senior director of Alibaba, and a chief scientist of Alibaba AI Labs. Prior to that, he was a tenured Associate Professor with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He received his B.Eng. degree from Harbin Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering and the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a recipient of MIT technology review innovator under 35 award (Asia). He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, and an area chair of ICCV 2017 and CVR 2018. He has published around 100 high quality research papers in top journals and conferences. His H-index is 30, according to Google scholar. Artificial intelligence technologies invented by his team have been licensed to 6 international companies during his tenure as a professor.

    Phil spent the past decade in mobile and digital media. In 2006, he was VP of Product for the Alex eReader which was later sold to Barnes & Noble that became the inaugural Nook. He then founded Information Humanities in 2007 that published the award winning immersive Glo Bible. Prior to his corporate endeavors, Phil built schools and orphanages in the “stans” particularly Tajikistan and Afghanistan where he came up with his ebook education idea for the Alex eReader. Phil holds a B.A and B.S in Mathematics and Physics from UCSD, an M.Div on Postmodern Philosophy from Fuller Seminary. His passion and curiosity for nature also led him to work as an astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics & Space Sciences at UCSD (2003) and as a research assistant at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in 2004). In 2008, he joined HTC as head of business and corporate development, leading partnerships in the Silicon Valley and Hollywood including investments in KKBox, SoundHound, Magnet, and the acquisition of Beats by Dre. In 2013, he serendipitously discovered VR at HTC and sourced the Valve relationship that became the Vive. Most recently, he founded the first VR/AR fund Presence Capital and joined Horizons Ventures as Advisor investing in VR/AR, AI, and Space Ventures. He serves on the board of several companies including Improbable in London, Soul Machines in New Zealand, and Eyeway in Israel, an advisor to the Vive in Taiwan and Lytro in Silicon Valley and an angel investor in companies like Lifebeam, Deep Optics, and Space Pharma. He is a proud and happy father of Miles, Naomi and Olive.

  • Qiang Yang

    New Bright Professor of Engineering

    Qiang Yang is the New Bright University Named Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he is the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He was the founding head of the Huawei Noah’s Ark Lab (2012-2015). He is currently the Technical Advisor to WeChat. His research interests are data mining, machine learning and artificial intelligence. He is a fellow of AAAI, IEEE, IAPR and AAAS, and ACM Distinguished Scientist. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science from University of Maryland, College Park in 1989, and had been a faculty member at University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University in Canada. He had been the founding Editor in Chief of ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (ACM TIST) between 2009 and 2014, and is the founding Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Big Data (IEEE TBD). He has been conference and program chairs for international conferences such as ACM KDD 2010 and 2012, ACM IUI 2010, IEEE Big Data 2013, ACM RecSys 2013 and Program Chair for the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) in 2015.

  • Jongmoon Kim



    Jongmoon Kim is the Chief Executive Officer of ToolGen. His previous work in IT led to a milestone in the history of IT in Korea: He founded Thrunet, which provided Korea's first high-speed Internet access service and was the first Korean company to be listed on NASDAQ. He also has experience with several other IT companies, including IBM Korea, Solvit, and Trigem Computer. Since 2001, he has extended his knowledge from IT to BT. He brings an innovative managerial perspective to ToolGen, which builds on his shared experiences with IT and BT. Jongmoon Kim studied political science at Yonsei University where he received a Master's degree in Public administration. He completed the course of a doctorate in Policy Studies at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom and is currently working as an adjunct professor at Sookmyung Women's University, Yonsei University and Catholic University in Korea. Jongmoon Kim joined Toolgen in December 2012.

    Jason is the founder and CEO of cherrypicks, a regional leader in mobile technology and eCommerce specializing in building O2O shopping loyalty communities and applying leading-edge technologies in augmented reality and proximity detection. Jason is an industry icon in Hong Kong well known for his successful entrepreneurial experience in mobile innovation. With disruptive Online-to-Offline (O2O) solutions and patent-pending product and technology inventions, cherrypicks has represented Hong Kong and China in many world stages and won over 100 local and international awards. The early entrepreneurial journey of the company was also featured as a Harvard Business School case study (#N9-807-106). cherrypicks' solution business and cherrypicks alpha, another startup spun off with the company’s product business, were strategically merged with NetDragon (HKSE:777) in 2014 and 2016 respectively. Apart from leading both entities, Jason is also a mentor, an advisor and an investor for a number of startups, incubators and co-working spaces to give back to startups in Hong Kong and Silicon Valley.

He is the Director of Security for First Look Media. Prior to this he worked on the security team at Google. He is a founding member of The Secure Domain Foundation, a non-profit, free, adversary intelligence group.     Donald R. Sadoway is the John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science, M.A.Sc. in Chemical Metallurgy, and Ph.D. in Chemical Metallurgy are all from the University of Toronto. The author of over 160 scientific papers and holder of 24 U.S. patents, his research is directed towards rechargeable batteries as well as environmentally sound metals extraction. He is the founder of two companies, Ambri and Boston Electrometallurgical. Viewed 1,750,000 times, his TED talk is about inventing technology and inventing inventors.     Ir Professor Ping-kong Alexander Wai is currently Vice President (Research Development) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and also Chair Professor of Optical Communications.


    His research interests include optical fiber communications and optical networks and is an active contributor to the technical field, having over 200 refereed international journal publications. He has contributed to the organization, served an invited speaker and keynote speakers of many international conferences. He is a fellow of Optical Society of America since 2009. In January and December 2012, Professor Wai elevated to IEEE Fellow and Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences respectively.     Weng Li has over 20 years' experience in the field of pharmaceutical research and development. Currently, she is the Research Director at Athenex Hong Kong. As the first employee of the Athenex Hong Kong Office, she is responsible for establishing and overseeing the Hong Kong research team that primarily focuses on formulation and pre-clinical development of oral cancer drugs. Since its inception in 2013, the Hong Kong team has generated drug candidates that have successfully gained allowance from the US Food and Drug Administration as 'Investigational New Drugs'. Prior to her role at Athenex, Weng Li was based at SmithKline Beecham and GlaxoSmithKline, United Kingdom for over ten years.     Dr. Le Cong obtained his B.S. with highest honor from Tsinghua University, his Ph.D. from Harvard University co-advised by Drs.     Angela obtained her BS in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley, and her MS and PhD in Bioengineering from Stanford University. At Stanford, she was awarded the Bio-X Bowes Scholarship for interdisciplinary research, and the prestigious Siebel Scholarship for top Bioengineering graduates. In 2015 she co-founded Agenovir, a therapeutics company with the mission of treating diseases associated with viral persistence. She is now Assistant Professor, jointly appointed in the Divisions of Life Sciences and of Biomedical Engineering, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Angela is passionate about novel technology research, and translating that research into the clinic via entrepreneurship.

She was the Laureate of the 2011 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award and recipient of a number of awards, including the RSC Centenary Medal, RSC Ludwig Mond Award, JSCC International Award, JPA Eikohsha Award, APA Masuhara Award Lectureship, State Natural Science Award, CCS-China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) Chemistry Contribution Prize, etc. She currently serves as Associate Editor of Inorganic Chemistry and Member of International Editorial Advisory Boards of J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem., Chem. Sci., Chem, Acc. Chem. Res., Chem. Rev., ACS Nano, Chem. Mater., Nat. Sci.     Mr Steve Leonard is a technology-industry leader with a wide range of experiences, having played key roles in building several global technology companies in Software, Hardware and Services.     In his current role as Founding Chief Executive of SGInnovate, a company held within the National Research Foundation of Singapore, Mr Leonard has been chartered to help translate some of the 'deep-tech' R&D, for which Singapore has gained a global reputation, into commercial success by working with local and international partners.


    Prior to his current role, Mr Leonard served as the Executive Deputy Chairman of the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), the statutory board within the Singapore Government Ministry of Communications and Information, with various responsibilities for the technology and telecommunications environment in Singapore. Mr Leonard continues to serve as the Deputy Chairman of IDA at the request of the Minister. Mr Leonard serves on the advisory boards of a range of universities and organisations in Singapore.

  • Kok Wai Cheah

    (Associate Head and Chair Professor in Physics, Hong Kong Baptist University)

    Prof. Kok Wai Cheah, Elizabeth Law Endowed Chair of Advanced Materials, serves as Associate Head of the Department of Physics, as well as Founding Director of Institute of Advanced Materials, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). He became a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2013 and received President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work from HKBU in the academic year of 2015-16. He is one of the founders of Cathay Photonics Limited, a spin-off company from Hong Kong Baptist University, and he is main person behind invention of the ultra-hard anti-scratch thin film in which this invention won Grand Prix Award at the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2016.

    Kevin Geiger has over 25 years experience in the arts & entertainment, including 15 years with Disney in Burbank and Beijing. Resident in China since 2008, Kevin has enjoyed an eclectic career as artist, animator, technician, teacher, consultant, entrepreneur, producer and executive. Among his accomplishments, Kevin is a Disney feature animation veteran, was an animation instructor at Cal Arts, is the first foreign Guest Professor at the Beijing Film Academy's Animation School, received the 2011 Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award, co-founded Magic Dumpling Entertainment in Beijing, and was VP & Head of Creative for Disney’s Greater China Local Content team, where he created Disney’s first Chinese TV co-production. In 2015, Kevin left Disney to resume his independent ventures in China. He is currently a founding Partner of Magic Dumpling Entertainment, Distinguished Professor & Acting Vice Dean of the Beijing Film Academy's new Digital Media School, and Executive Director of the Beijing Film Academy's International Animation & Virtual Reality Research Center.

    Kinuko Masaki is the CEO and co-founder of SmartEar Inc.. SmartEar, Inc. provides a complete end-to-end solution for voice-enabling enterprise messaging applications. This platform is comprised of a tightly integrated state-of-art ear device, an “eOS” (ear Operating System) and an AI engine which allows SmartEar to control the full user experience with their smart assistant. Dr. Masaki has earned a bachelor’s and master’s in EECS from MIT, a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Harvard/MIT, and a Post-PhD from Stanford Medical School in stem cell engineering. After leaving the academic world, she led R&D efforts at Advanced Bionics and EarLens and created intellectual properties for several companies seeking to further hearing and audio technology. She believes the ear will house the next computing platform and the time is ripe for the integration of AI, speech recognition, and hearing technologies.

    Nii Quaynor graduated from Dartmouth College in 1972 with B.A (Engineering Science) and received a Ph.D (Computer Science) in distributed systems in 1977 from S.U.N.Y at Stony Brook.


    Nii worked with DEC, U.S.A from 1977 till 1992 and returned to Ghana to establish the first ISP operated by Network Computer Systems (NCS) in 1993. Nii also established Ghana Dot Com (GDC) an ICANN Accredited Domain Registrar in 2006.


    Nii had earlier in 1979 established the Computer Science Department at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.


    Nii is the Convener of AfNOG, a network technology transfer institution since 2000 and Founding Chairman of AFRINIC, the African numbers registry. He is also a Founding Member of AfricaCERT and WACREN.


    Nii taught microprocessors with International Center for Theoretical Physics in several developing countries.


    He is the Board Chairman of National IT Agency (NITA), a member of GhiPPS and National Identification Agency, Patron - ISOC Ghana Chapter. Nii served on several Boards including ICANN, UN ICT Task Force, IGF-MAG, GNA, ICANN Strategy Panel, Public Responsibility.


    Nii remains the Chairman of GDC and a Professor of Computer Science at University of Cape-Coast, Ghana.


    Nii received the Internet Society’s prestigious Jonathan Postel Service Award for pioneering work to advance Internet in Africa in December 2007. He was also inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in August 2013 for his pioneering role in the development of the Internet in Africa. Further, Nii received in Dec 2014, the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah Genius Award for Information Communication Technology. Nii was also awarded ICANN’s Multi-Stakeholder Ethos award in June 2015.

    Prof. Tam has published more than 500 technical papers and awarded/applied about 20 patents. He has strong R&D collaborations with the industry and his team has installed many FBG sensing systems. Currently, Prof. Tam’s R&D team is building the world’s first city-wide fibre-optic sensing network for condition-based monitoring of metro systems in Hong Kong. He won numerous international awards for his inventions, and is the Third Prize Winner of the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis 2014.

    Yang Xu's work lies at the intersection of geospatial science, urban informatics, and computational social science. He obtained his Ph.D. (2015) and M.S. (2011) degrees in geographic information science from the University of Tennessee and Wuhan University, respectively. He was also a part-time research associate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), one of the US leading research institutes. By harnessing the power of big geospatial data, Yang Xu’s research addresses important questions of individual travel behavior, collective human mobility patterns, and various aspects of urban and social dynamics.

    Dr. Winnie Tang JP is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. She is one of the locally-bred IT entrepreneurs of Hong Kong. In the 1990s, Dr. Tang founded Esri China (Hong Kong) Limited to develop and promote Geographic Information System (GIS) software and solutions. Over the years, she has been actively advocating the use of technology and sharing her views regarding the ICT industry, eHealth, environmental conservation, entrepreneurship and smart city concepts through her services in government and non-government organizations in Hong Kong.
